Don’t Be A Money Mule
A money mule is a person who receives and transfers money from victims of fraud. The person acting as the money mule may not be aware that they are involved in a scam, but could face repercussions regardless.
How To Protect Yourself
Don’t engage in financial transactions with strangers. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Some scams may take the place as romance scams, where a love interest you met online needs you to send them money in exchange for their time/relationship. As always, be cautious with who you give financial information to online.
Don’t take a job that promises easy money and involves sending and receiving unknown packages or money. These scams may require you to buy gift cards or purchase money orders, in hopes of you receiving a bigger payout. A legitimate business will not make you act as a middle man for their accounting department.
Reassure yourself that any work-from-home job is a legitimate business. If you are not sure if a company is legitimate, you can usually do a quick search online to read reviews and test a company’s reputation. You can also visit the Better Business Bureau or a local business directory to learn more.
