How You Can Celebrate Black History Month

February is Black History Month. As a business that has roots in Flint and the surrounding areas, we wanted to share some ways that you can locally support and celebrate all-year long.

Shop Locally AND Shop Black-Owned Businesses. It is important to build back into our community by supporting small and local businesses. Explore Flint & Genesee County created this sample list of community black-owned businesses to shop and support, and Mlive also created a database in 2020 that can be searched.

Support the Flint United Basketball Team. Flint United will compete within The Basketball League, an American-based, professional basketball league that currently resides in 23 markets across the country. Dort Financial Credit Union has proudly signed on as a sponsor of the team as they make their 2022 debut this April at the Dort Financial Center in Flint, with an exhibition game in February. The team is owned by 2007 Carman-Ainsworth High School alumni, Kevin Mays, and features players from Michigan and all over the United States. You can find out more information about the team and purchase tickets by visiting their website.

Educate Yourself. There are many resources available within our community, from the Flint Institute of Arts to the Sloan Museum, Flint offers many exhibits centered around black history. Explore Flint & Genesee County put together a calendar of events in February that aim to celebrate black heritage and history.

Get to Know Your Past & Present Community Leaders. There’s no better way to learn than from immersing yourself and reaching out to community members and talking to them. Flint has been built upon a rich history of innovation and people leading the pack. MyCity magazine compiled some key community leaders from both the past and those who are presently paving the way for the next generation.
