Dort Financial Team Members Celebrate National Day of Service with the United Way

While Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized as a federal holiday, it is truly so much more. It is a day to honor the legacy of one of our greatest civil right’s leaders. It is also observed as a National Day of Service to honor Dr. King’s believe in volunteerism to support community.

To observe the National Day of Service on Monday, nearly 300 Dort Financial Credit Union team members gathered to complete a service project with the United Way of Genesee County. Team members were divided into groups to assemble and create comfort packages for children. The packages included a handmade blanket, stuffed animal, coloring and activity books, and a dental kit.

Dort Financial has been a partner of the United Way of Genesee County for several years and has participated in this project previously.

“It gives our team members the opportunity to get to know one another while working towards the same goal,” said Deana Turcott, Vice President of Human Resources.  “Our team members love being able to give back to the community and making a difference, and we understand the difference the comfort care kits make for a child who is dealing with a crisis.”

At the end of the event, 310 comfort kits were created by Dort Financial Credit Union employees. The kits will be delivered to various first responder and rescue organizations to give to a child when they are exposed to an emergency situation.

Many local charities and organizations also hosted events that encouraged the public to volunteer and improve their communities with an act of service on MLK Day. If you are interested in learning more about the United Way of Genesee County, or would like to volunteer, please visit their website.
