Harry Awdish Memorial Student Scholarship Program

Applications Now Accepted for the Harry Awdish Memorial $1,000 Student Scholarship.

The credit union movement was founded on the philosophy of “People Helping People”.  In keeping with our philosophy, Dort Financial Credit Union’s student scholarship program was established to help our members achieve their higher educational goals.  We are offering  fifteen (15) $1,000 scholarships this year to graduating high school seniors or older students seeking to further their education after high school.  Applications will be accepted from November 1, 2022 to March 3, 2023.

CRITERIA:

  1. Applicant must be the primary account holder and a member in good standing of Dort Financial Credit Union. Account must have been opened on or before December 31, 2022.
  2. Applicant must be a high school graduate in 2023 or earlier with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in high school or in one full year of post-high school education, if applicable.
  3. Applicant must be accepted as a full-time student at an accredited institution: university, community college, trade school, vocational school, or employer-sponsored skilled trade apprenticeship program.
  4. Applicant must write an essay describing what “Being Financially Responsible” means to him/her (150-200 words).
  5. Two (2) letters of recommendation must be submitted with application.
  6. Special consideration will be given to students who have been involved in extracurricular and/or community service activities or who demonstrate financial need.

 Previous DFCU Scholarship Winners will be considered ineligible for another award.

How to Apply: 

COMPLETE and SUBMIT the Scholarship Application along with the following:

  1. HIGH SCHOOL or POST-HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS
  2. LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE as a full-time student to an accredited institution: university, community college, trade school, vocational school, or employer-sponsored skilled trade apprenticeship program.
  3. ESSAY explaining what “Being Financially Responsible” means to you (150-200 words)
  1. TWO (2) LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION from influencing adults (such as:  teacher, coach, counselor, community leader, employer).

Application may be completed online or printed and completed in blue or black ink. Application and all supporting documents may be submitted in one of three ways:

  3. Drop Off at any Dort Financial Branch by close of business on March 3, 2023.

Application must be received or postmarked no later than March 3, 2023.  Late or incomplete applications will be disqualified.  Scholarship checks will be made payable to the recipient and the educational institution at the discretion of Dort Financial Credit Union.  Under no circumstances will checks be made payable to the student alone.  All application information will be kept strictly confidential.  Scholarships will be awarded by July 31, 2023.

All complete applications will be reviewed by members of Dort Financial Credit Union’s Scholarship Committee and awards will be determined in a fair and consistent manner.  Dort Financial Credit Union does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, marital status, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.  Employees and volunteers of Dort Financial Credit Union and their family members are eligible to apply.
